Future of Pakistan’s deep-sea port Gwadar

Gwadar the country’s largest deep-sea port came into being back in 2006, with the sole purpose of incrementing trade activities of Pakistan. Though initially development was slow, but with the inception of CPEC, it picked up the pace and Gwadar’s port is now one of the biggest projects of Pakistan.

The Port of Gwadar is now more important than ever, if Pakistan wants a stable and a progressing economy, then the advancement of port is imperative.

One belt, One road is one of the main projects of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). China plans to connect Gwadar and several other cities to its Xinjiang province in the west by a series of highways and roads.

Then by doing so China can import all of its trading goods at Gwadar, and then transport them easily by traveling only a distance of 3000 Km. China which imports 80% of its oil from the Arab states to its port in the east, and has to travel a distance of 10,000 Km. The construction of Gwadar’s port will save China a lot time and fuel.

Pakistan will benefit from all the transit fees that will place on the economic corridor. CPEC has several other projects of technological advancement and opening up of new industries benefit the country’s crippling economy.

FUTURE OF GWADAR PORT:
The phase II of Gwadar port is underway, and Pakistan expects it to have 4 new multipurpose berths in the coming years, with much additional advancement in machinery and facilities for the betterment of the port. By 2045 Pakistan plans to build 145 berths at its deep-sea port.

Nadeem Javaid who’s an advisor to the Government has said that Pakistan will majorly benefit from CPEC:
  • The CPEC is expected to be operational from June one year from now, and Pakistan anticipates that around 4% of international trade to go through it by 2020.
  • Pakistan will gain up to $6billion from various transport, transit and toll fees.
  • CPEC and Gwadar’s port will further boost the economic growth of the country by 5.2% in the coming years
  • Import of various fuels at the port would then be used for power generation significantly reducing load shedding
  • Investment in Gwadar Property leading to development of various housing schemes, with Gwadar property prices rising with each day.
Considering the rate of development in Gwadar, it may seem like nothing will stop the progress of the country and that Pakistan and especially Gwadar is looking at a very bright future.
